More than a Century of Service
By the end of the late 19th century, the Michigan community of Muskegon, an Ottawa word meaning marshy, had already gone through multiple transformations.
Perfectly situated where the Muskegon River flows into Lake Michigan, the area had been home to numerous tribes of Indians, fur trappers of the Hudson Bay Company and, in the 1880s, to some 47 sawmills and more millionaires per capita than any other city in the country.
It was at the start of the last decade of that century, when the community was reinventing itself yet again as an industrial center, that an 18-year-old English boy, Horace Schipp, saw a way to serve both the residents and businesses of the town. He began repairing feed sacks, harnesses and awnings and in 1890 launched an enterprise that would eventually become Muskegon Awning & Fabrication.
For the next hundred years, the business would weather depressions, recessions, wars and more. Various owners and their families, all as dedicated as the company's founder, would continue to lead and grow the business, expanding services, product lines and facilities to meet the needs of an ever-increasing list of customers.
