American Flags: How to Fold and Fly
While holidays are a great time to proudly
fly your American flag, your Michigan
flag and any other flags you enjoy displaying, in fact, every day is a good
day to fly your flags.
However, there is an etiquette for flying and displaying your USA
Flag and we have those guidelines on our website (just click on the link) Flag Etiquette. In
addition, when you take Old Glory down, you need to fold it accordingly. Below are steps and an illustratio
Instructions on How to Fold Your American Flag
- To
properly fold an American Flag, two
people are usually needed.
- The flag is held waist-high
and open with each person taking an end.
- Fold the flag in half
lengthwise and then fold it again making sure that the blue field and stars or
“union” are showing at one end and the stripes at the other.
- The person holding the blue
field and stars end of the flag remains stationary as the second person holding
the striped end of the flag folds one corner over to the opposite side of the
flag, making a triangle.
- This triangular folding
process is continued until only the blue stars remain showing.
- Tuck the loose edge of the
flag into the pocket formed by the fold until only the stars are left showing.

The
American Flag folding ceremony can be quite beautiful. There are a number of meaningful
scripts and readings that have been written and can be used during the ceremony. To find these, go to http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/more/folds.htm.
